The Department of Natural Resources(DNR) is charged with the oversite of the Archives of Michigan. The Archives of Michigan EAD (Encoded Archival Description) Finding Aids site provides World Wide Web access to finding aids or descriptive inventories for archival records and manuscript collections at the Archives. The project is still in infancy, but more finding aids will be added periodically.

To use this valuable tool, you must first determine the state or area where the birth, death, marriage, or divorce occurred, then click on that state or area. There is usually a fee for certified copies of records. If the records are for genealogical purposes check with the historical and genealogical societies in the area you are researching, it might be possible to get "genealogical" copies at a lower cost.

The website provides a single entry point for all counties in Michigan, where collected databases are stored. In addition, the databases are indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
