Mission Statement
The Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan (“PGSM”) promotes and encourages research in Polish genealogy as well as the preservation of historical materials which aid in the documentation of family histories. PGSM is dedicated to educating its members and the public in Polish culture, Polish genealogy, and genealogical research methods and techniques.
History of PGSM
PGSM was established in 1978 at a meeting held at the Albert J. Zak Memorial Public Library in Hamtramck, Michigan. The name of the society was chosen, officers and directors were elected, and a constitution and bylaws were established. A decision was made to offer lectures of genealogical interest to members. Membership has always been open to individuals who live in and outside of Michigan. The Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library supported and sponsored PGSM at its inception and continues to sponsor the society. PGSM published its first newsletter in 1981 and now offers a journal and a newsletter.
PGSM is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and a member of the Michigan Genealogical Council.
